The One That Got Away

People often ask what it’s like to create these amazing instruments and then let them go. The honest answer? It never gets easier. Every guitar that leaves the shop takes a piece of its maker with it.

You spend weeks — sometimes months — with an instrument. You learn its voice before it even has strings. You know which fret sings a little sweeter, which angle of light makes the top catch fire. You fall into a rhythm with it. And then one day, it’s done, and someone else’s name is on the shipping label.

Letting Go Is the Job

A luthier who can’t let go is a collector, not a craftsman. The entire point of building these instruments is that they go out into the world and live lives of their own — on stages, in studios, in the hands of players who will write music I’ll never hear on them. That’s not a loss. That’s the completion of the work.

But every once in a while, there’s one that stings a little. One where the alignment of wood, vision, and execution was so perfect that you catch yourself hesitating before you pack the case. Those are the ones that remind you why you do this. And then you seal the box, send it off, and start the next one — chasing that feeling again.

Because the next one might be even better. That’s the beautiful curse of this craft: the best guitar you’ll ever build is always the next one.
